Sunday 25th August 2019 marked the 150th Anniversary of the laying of the Christ Church Lavender Bay Foundation Stone. Christ Church Anglican is excited to have served the Lower North Shore Community for 150 years.
The day began by re-enacting the steamer journey taken by clergy, government representatives, and community members on the 25th August 1869, who crossed the harbour from the Sydney side to Lavender Bay, then ascended the newly constructed steps up to the site of the new church building. However, unlike the original journey, we departed from Lavender Bay to enjoy a 90 minute ferry cruise with historical commentary of what the harbour would have been like in 1869 whilst being served a sumptuous breakfast and beverages before returning to the Lavender Bay wharf. From there we walked up the historic steps to the church for a celebration service that looked back on 150 years of ministry and looked forward to the next 150 years in the community, before then enjoying a classic Church picnic and games in the grounds of the church.
The anniversary also launched our 150 year Rejuvenation Fund. We are custodians of a beautiful and significant facility in the community. To ensure these facilities remain a well-loved part of the community for the next 150 years we will be undergoing some major rejuvenation work over the next three to five years, estimated to cost around $500,000. Christ Church was built on the generous donations of those who gathered for the original Foundation Stone laying, and we hope this 150th anniversary will provide a reason for generosity from today’s community.
